Common Vietnam visa mistakes

These are the problems travellers ask us about after using the official government website. An error is worth taking seriously. It does not mean every error can be corrected, or that a new visa is always required.

01

Wrong arrival date

The date you entered as your intended arrival is not the day you now plan to land.

That date is not the same thing as the period a granted visa is valid. What matters for travel is whether your actual arrival falls inside the visa's validity.

Further information

02

Name or spelling mistakes

A given name, family name or middle name does not match the passport you will travel on.

Australian travel advice says the name on the visa must match the passport exactly. A spelling difference should not be ignored, and it cannot always be edited later.

Further information

03

Incorrect passport number

The number on the application is not the number on the passport you will present.

Airlines and immigration compare the two. A different passport number is a serious mismatch, and an issued visa cannot be assumed to be editable.

Further information

04

Incorrect date of birth

The date of birth on the application does not match the passport biodata page.

This is one of the details that must match. Check it before you travel, and do not assume the official portal will let you change it.

Further information

05

Wrong visa type or entry details

The purpose, length of stay, number of entries or other entry details do not fit the trip.

A granted visa only covers what it says. We cannot promise that a visa type, stay length or entry detail can be changed after a decision.

06

Visa already approved with errors

The e-visa or approval has been issued, and you have found a mistake on it.

An issued visa is not something we can promise to amend. Check it against your passport, then see what the official portal offers for your application.

Further information

Wrong arrival date

The arrival date on an application is the day you said you expected to enter Vietnam. Once a visa is granted, it has its own validity. Smartraveller advises travellers to make sure the visa covers the period of the trip.

Landing on a different day can still be in order when that day sits inside the validity printed on the visa. Arriving before the visa is valid, or after it expires, is a different problem: that visa does not cover the entry. Read the dates on the document you were given. Do not treat the date you originally typed as the expiry date.

Name or spelling mistakes

Smartraveller says the details on the visa must exactly match the passport. Check the full name and any middle names, not only the family name. The same advice warns that errors, typos or omitted names may lead to a fee to correct at check-in or on arrival, being unable to board, or being refused entry.

That is a warning about the risk, not a promise that every spelling difference will be stopped or that a correction will be available. Compare the visa with the biodata page of the passport you will carry. If you renewed your passport after applying, the name and number on the old passport are not a safe substitute.

Incorrect passport number

The passport number on the visa has to be the number on the passport you present. A single wrong character is still a mismatch. Smartraveller includes the passport number among the details that must be correct.

If the application is still pending, check evisa.gov.vn for a correction option on that application. If the visa has already been issued, do not assume the number can be edited in place. Using a different passport from the one on the visa is a problem to sort out before you go to the airport.

Incorrect date of birth

Date of birth is checked against the passport in the same way as your name and passport number. A wrong day, month or year should be treated as a mismatch, even when the rest of the application looks right.

Whether it can be changed depends on the status of your application and on what the official portal currently allows. There is no general rule that a date of birth can be amended after approval.

Wrong visa type or entry details

Purpose of travel, length of stay and single or multiple entry describe the permission you asked for. The decision, if one is granted, is the permission you actually have. Smartraveller notes that an e-visa, if granted, may allow a stay of up to 90 days and may be single or multiple entry. Your document states which of those applies to you.

If those details do not match the trip, get advice before travelling. We will not tell you that an entry point, visa type or length of stay can be altered after the visa is issued. For who needs a visa, and what to prepare, see our eligibility and requirements guide.

Visa already approved with errors

Finding a mistake after approval is common, and it is more limited than finding one while the application is still open. Check the approval against your passport and your flights. Then search your application on the official portal and use only the options that page shows.

If the portal does not offer a change, a new application is sometimes the practical path, especially where the name, date of birth or passport number is wrong. It is not the automatic answer for every discrepancy. An intended arrival date that still falls inside a valid visa is one example where a new application may be unnecessary. We can help you tell those situations apart. We cannot amend an issued visa ourselves, and we cannot guarantee that Vietnamese authorities will.

What should you do if your Vietnam visa has a mistake?

Work through the application you actually have. The right next step depends on whether it is still pending, and on whether your real travel dates sit inside a visa that has already been granted.

  1. Check the visa against your passport and your trip

Compare the full name, middle names, date of birth and passport number with the biodata page. Then compare your flight dates with the validity on the visa, not only with the arrival date you typed. Smartraveller also says to check the exit date stamped in your passport on arrival, because it can differ from the visa.

  2. See whether the application is pending or already approved

A pending application and an issued visa are not treated the same way. Keep the registration or reference details the government site gave you, and the email address you used.

  3. Check the official portal for a correction or update

Use the official Vietnam e-visa website and follow only the options it shows for your application. Australian passport holders cannot get a visa on arrival, and Smartraveller says to apply only through that official site. Do not assume a correction button will be there. If it is not offered, it is not available for that application.

  4. Ask for help if you cannot resolve it, or travel is close

Call or chat with Vien Dong if the portal does not let you fix the error, or if you are due to fly soon. We will look at what you have and explain the assistance that is still realistic. Have your passport, the visa or application, and your flight details ready.

  5. Confirm the visa is appropriate before you travel

Before you leave, confirm that the details match your passport and that the visa is valid for the day you will arrive and the length of your stay. Print a copy, as Smartraveller suggests. Entry rules can change, so recheck Smartraveller's Vietnam advice as well as your own document.

Travelling soon? Urgent visa assistance

Vien Dong Tourist Services is a Melbourne travel agency with more than 20 years of experience, and a reputation for fast visa assistance when a departure cannot wait. If you have found a mistake and your flight is close, our Footscray team can assess the visa, the passport and the travel dates, then talk through the assistance and processing options that fit the situation.

Urgent help still has limits. We do not guarantee that a mistake can be corrected, that an issued visa can be amended, that a new visa will be approved, or that a result will be ready before you fly. Vietnamese authorities make those decisions. Our processing times explain the options we offer when a new application is the right path. Fees for those applications are listed on our fees page.

Frequently asked questions

Can I correct a mistake on my Vietnam eVisa?

Sometimes, and only if a correction is actually offered for your application. Sign in or search on evisa.gov.vn and use the options shown there. A pending application may still have a way to update details. An issued visa should not be treated as editable. Vien Dong can help you read the result. We cannot promise that the government portal will allow a change.

What happens if my arrival date is wrong?

First separate the date you typed from the dates the visa is valid. If your flight arrives on a day inside that validity, a different intended arrival date is not the same problem as arriving outside the visa. If you would land before the visa starts, or after it ends, the visa does not cover that entry. Smartraveller tells travellers to be sure the visa covers the whole trip. Check the document you were issued before you change flights or lodge anything else.

Can I travel if my name is misspelled?

Do not assume you can. Smartraveller says the name on the visa, including middle names, must exactly match the passport, and that typos or omitted names may mean you cannot board or are refused entry. Some travellers are allowed to travel with a minor difference, and some are not. That decision is not ours to make. Compare the spelling with the passport and get advice before you go to the airport.

What if my passport number is incorrect?

Treat a wrong passport number as a mismatch with the document you will show at check-in and on arrival. Smartraveller lists the passport number among the details that must be correct. Check whether the official portal still lets you correct the pending application. If the visa is already issued with the wrong number, do not rely on travelling with it. A new application may be needed. Confirm that before you pay for another visa.

Can I change my Vietnam eVisa after approval?

There is no general right to amend a Vietnam e-visa after it has been granted, and we will not tell you that a change is available. Look up the application on the official portal. If no change is offered, the issued document stands as it is. Where the passport details are wrong, people often have to apply again. Where the only issue is an intended arrival date inside a valid visa, another application may not be needed.

Do I need to apply for a new Vietnam visa?

Not for every mistake. Check the current application and the validity dates first. A new application is worth considering when an issued visa has the wrong name, date of birth or passport number, or when your arrival falls outside the visa you hold. It is a poor default when the granted visa already covers the trip and matches the passport. If a new application is the right step, you can start one with Vien Dong. Submitting another application is not always necessary.

How long does it take to resolve a visa mistake?

There is no single time. It depends on whether the official portal still allows a correction, whether a new application has to be lodged, and which processing option is used. Our processing times describe those options for applications we lodge. They are not a promise that an existing government application can be fixed on the same timetable. The outcome and the timing belong to the Vietnamese authorities.

What should I do if my flight is tomorrow?

Contact us now on (03) 9687 1057 or use the chat. Have the passport you will travel on, the visa or application reference, and your flight details with you. We will tell you plainly what can still be looked at before departure. We cannot promise a correction, a new visa, or an approval in time for the flight.

Can Vien Dong help if I applied through the official government website?

Yes. You do not have to have lodged the original application with us. We can review the visa or the pending application and explain the realistic options. We cannot log in and alter a government record for you. If the useful next step is a new application, our Melbourne team can help you prepare it. For a broader overview of applying from Australia, start with the eVisa help guides or contact the office.
